Solar Battery Annual Cycling Forecast
Estimate how many equivalent full cycles a solar battery may accumulate each year from its expected energy throughput. The forecast also shows cumulative cycles, annual throughput and the effect of changing battery usage over time.
Your cycling forecast
At the stated usage, the battery moves approximately 43,800 kWh over the 10-year forecast. Equivalent full cycles are calculated from throughput divided by usable battery capacity, so partial charge/discharge events accumulate into a cycle-equivalent measure.
| Year | Throughput | Equivalent cycles | Cumulative cycles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 486.7 |
| 2 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 973.3 |
| 3 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 1,460.0 |
| 4 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 1,946.7 |
| 5 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 2,433.3 |
| 6 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 2,920.0 |
| 7 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 3,406.7 |
| 8 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 3,893.3 |
| 9 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 4,380.0 |
| 10 | 4,380 kWh | 486.7 | 4,866.7 |
How the annual cycling forecast works
The central measure is equivalent full cycles. Instead of counting every charging event as one cycle, the calculator relates total battery energy throughput to the battery's usable energy capacity. For example, moving an amount of energy equal to 50% of usable capacity represents roughly 0.5 equivalent cycles under this simplified throughput convention.
Annual throughput is estimated as daily throughput multiplied by operating days. If the annual throughput-change assumption is non-zero, each subsequent year is adjusted by that percentage. This makes the forecast useful for systems where battery use is expected to increase or decrease rather than remain constant.
Why annual cycling matters for solar batteries
Cycling is one of the important variables when assessing battery utilization and long-term storage economics. A lightly used battery may accumulate relatively few equivalent cycles even though it remains installed for many years. A battery used for daily solar shifting, peak management or frequent backup events can accumulate substantially more throughput.
Cycle count should not be interpreted as a complete battery-life prediction. Real degradation depends on cell chemistry, temperature, depth of discharge, charging rate, state-of-charge exposure, calendar aging and the manufacturer's warranty methodology. Two batteries with the same equivalent-cycle count can therefore age differently.
Worked example
Suppose a 10 kWh battery has 90% usable capacity and moves 12 kWh per day for 365 days. Usable capacity is 9 kWh, giving approximately 1.33 equivalent cycles per day. The annual equivalent-cycle estimate is therefore about 487 cycles before considering any change in usage. The result is a planning estimate rather than a laboratory measurement.
How to use the result for planning
- Low cycling: investigate whether the battery is oversized relative to the energy it actually shifts.
- High cycling: compare expected throughput with the battery's warranty and degradation assumptions.
- Growing usage: use the annual growth field to test how electrification or higher solar utilization changes cumulative cycling.
- Changing operating patterns: build separate scenarios rather than treating one constant daily figure as certain.
Important limitations
This calculator does not model cell-level degradation, temperature, charge-rate limits, inverter losses, standby consumption, state-of-charge windows or manufacturer-specific warranty rules. If your source data are measured AC-side energy, be consistent when comparing them with a DC-side battery capacity. Mixing measurement points can materially distort equivalent-cycle estimates.
Frequently asked questions
What is an equivalent full cycle?
It is a normalized way of expressing cumulative battery energy movement as complete-capacity cycles. Multiple partial cycles can add up to one equivalent full cycle.
Is one calendar year always 365 operating days?
No. A system may have outages, seasonal operation or maintenance periods. Adjust the operating-day input when appropriate.
Does a high cycle count automatically mean the battery will fail sooner?
No. Cycling is only one aging factor. Temperature, depth of discharge, chemistry and calendar aging also matter.
Should charge and discharge energy both be counted?
Use the throughput convention consistently. Warranty documents may define throughput differently, so their specific definition should take priority for warranty comparisons.
Can I use this for home solar storage?
Yes. It is useful for estimating cycling intensity from daily solar shifting, provided the throughput and capacity figures are defined consistently.
