How roof rack compatibility is assessed

The calculator checks several separate constraints rather than treating a rack as universally compatible. The vehicle mounting arrangement must be compatible with the rack or its approved fitting system, and the combined roof load must stay within the most restrictive applicable capacity entered by the user.

Total roof load = Rack weight + Accessory weight + Cargo weight.

Permitted load = the lower of the vehicle roof limit and rack rated capacity.

Why the exact roof limit matters

Roof load limits can vary with the vehicle, configuration and loading condition. Use the manufacturer's applicable value rather than a generic assumption.

Dynamic and static loading can differ

The value relevant while driving may differ from a limit stated for another condition. This page does not invent manufacturer-specific limits.

Mounting geometry matters

A rack can meet a weight limit and still be wrong for the roof mounting system or required crossbar spacing. Confirm the exact fitting instructions.

Important safety point

Roof-mounted loads can affect vehicle handling, braking, clearance and wind sensitivity. A passing calculator result is not a substitute for manufacturer instructions.

FAQs

Can I use a generic roof load limit?

No. Use the applicable verified vehicle specification.

Does the rack weight count?

Yes. The rack itself is part of the roof load.

Does compatibility mean the setup is approved?

No. It means the entered constraints pass this planning calculation.
