Power Factor Penalty Cost Analyzer — Estimate Reactive Charges From Poor PF
Estimate the reactive demand created by a load with a low power factor and calculate the penalty using your own utility charge assumption rather than a made-up tariff.
Power factor and utility inputs
How poor power factor creates extra apparent demand
For a given real power, a lower power factor requires more apparent power. Reactive power can be estimated from real power using the angle implied by the power factor.
Real, reactive and apparent power
Real power is measured in kW, reactive power in kVAR and apparent power in kVA. They describe different parts of an AC load.
Why the target PF matters
A penalty mechanism based on a threshold depends on where the utility places the boundary. Entering a different target changes the modeled excess reactive demand.
Worked example
At 500 kW and PF 0.78, the apparent power is approximately 641 kVA. The corresponding reactive power is approximately 401 kVAR.
Limitations
This calculator does not know the actual contract tariff. It also does not model harmonics, distortion power factor or demand-specific billing formulas unless they are converted into your entered charge basis.
Frequently asked questions
Does a low PF always create a utility penalty?
No. Billing rules vary. This tool requires you to enter the penalty mechanism you want to model.
Can PF equal 1?
Yes. Reactive power becomes zero at unity power factor.
Does this calculate capacitor size?
No. It analyzes penalty exposure rather than correction equipment sizing.
