Sloping Valley Formula
When the valley run is entered as a horizontal plan dimension, the calculator converts it to the approximate sloping valley length using the roof slope angle.
Sloping Valley Length = Horizontal Valley Run ÷ cos(Roof Slope Angle)
This assumes a simplified valley geometry where the supplied slope angle represents the relevant roof-plane slope.
Flashing Allowances
Additional length can be included for the upper and lower ends of the valley flashing.
Length Per Valley = Sloping Valley Length + Start Allowance + End Allowance
Base Flashing Length = Length Per Valley × Number of Valleys
These allowances are estimating inputs and should be adjusted for the actual valley termination, overlap, trim and installation details.
Waste Calculation
A percentage waste allowance can be added to account for cutting, trimming, damage and installation losses.
Waste Length = Base Flashing Length × Waste %
Total Required Length = Base Flashing Length × (1 + Waste %)
Approximate Flashing Area
If a valley flashing width is entered, the calculator provides an approximate material area.
Flashing Area = Total Required Length × Flashing Width
This is a simple surface-area estimate and does not represent the developed flat pattern of a formed valley flashing profile.
Important Limitations
This is a preliminary valley flashing length estimator.
It assumes a simplified valley geometry.
It does not design the valley flashing profile.
It does not determine flashing width or bend dimensions.
It does not calculate valley metal thickness.
It does not calculate valley drainage capacity.
It does not calculate underlayment or membrane requirements.
It does not calculate sealant, fasteners or clips.
It does not account for complex roof intersections or irregular valleys.
Actual flashing dimensions and installation details depend on the roofing system and manufacturer.
Use this result for preliminary material estimating only. Confirm valley geometry, flashing dimensions, overlaps, terminations, drainage details and installation requirements against the actual roof design and selected roofing system.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Metal Roof Valley Flashing Calculator calculate?
It estimates valley flashing length from the horizontal valley run, roof slope, number of valleys and additional allowances.
Does it account for roof slope?
Yes. The calculator converts the horizontal valley run into an approximate sloping length using the roof slope angle.
Can I calculate several valleys?
Yes. Enter the number of valleys and the calculator multiplies the required length accordingly.
Can I include extra material at the valley ends?
Yes. Separate start and end allowances can be entered for each valley.
Does it calculate valley flashing width?
No. The width depends on the roofing profile, roof geometry, drainage requirements and installation specifications.
Does it calculate flashing sheet quantity?
No. It estimates total flashing length. Sheet or coil quantity depends on available stock dimensions and fabrication/nesting requirements.
