Estimate the cost of repainting metal surfaces from surface area, coating system, paint consumption, preparation labor, application labor, equipment and overhead.
Metal Surface & Coating System
Coverage should come from the selected coating manufacturer's technical data. The calculator applies application efficiency and a separate material allowance to estimate practical purchasing quantity.
Surface Preparation & Labor
For a meaningful total, keep the currency selections consistent. If different currencies are entered, the calculator reports the cost components separately rather than applying an invented exchange rate.

Paint Material Calculation
The calculator first determines the theoretical quantity from total coating area and the stated coverage rate.
Total Coat Area = Metal Area × Number of Coats
Theoretical Paint = Total Coat Area ÷ Coverage Rate
Preparation and painting labor are entered separately so that surface preparation can be priced independently from coating application.
Preparation Cost = Preparation Hours × Labor Rate
Painting Cost = Painting Hours × Labor Rate
Total Labor Cost = Preparation Cost + Painting Cost
Overhead and Selling Price
Overhead is applied to the direct repainting cost. A separate profit or contingency percentage can then be added to produce an estimated selling price.
This is a preliminary metal repainting cost estimator.
It does not determine the correct coating system for a specific metal substrate.
It does not determine surface preparation standards such as blasting or power-tool cleaning grades.
It does not calculate actual coating thickness.
Paint coverage varies with surface profile, application method and coating characteristics.
Labor productivity depends on access, geometry, preparation condition and site conditions.
Equipment and access costs should be replaced with actual project costs.
Different currencies are not automatically converted.
Actual project costs may include mobilization, containment, inspection, testing and environmental controls.
Use this result for preliminary estimating only. Confirm coating specifications, preparation requirements, coverage rates, labor productivity, access requirements and actual material prices before issuing a final quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Metal Repainting Cost Calculator include?
It combines paint material, surface preparation labor, painting labor, equipment/access costs, other direct costs, overhead and profit or contingency.
Can I calculate repainting for multiple coating coats?
Yes. Enter the number of coats and the paint coverage rate for the selected coating material.
Does it include surface preparation?
Yes. Preparation labor hours can be entered separately from painting labor hours.
Can I include equipment or access costs?
Yes. Equipment, access and other direct costs can be entered separately.
Does the calculator include overhead?
Yes. An overhead percentage is applied to the direct repainting cost.
Does it calculate a selling price?
Yes. A profit or contingency percentage can be added after overhead to produce an estimated selling price.
