Detailed Gate Takeoff

Component Quantity Length / Area Allowance Estimated Weight

How the Gate Frame Estimate Works

The gate frame is calculated around each gate leaf using two vertical members and two horizontal members. The entered clearance is deducted from the overall dimensions for preliminary frame sizing.

Frame Length per Leaf = 2 × Leaf Height + 2 × Leaf Width

Diagonal braces are estimated using the diagonal of each leaf. Internal horizontal rails are calculated separately using the entered number of rails per leaf.

Diagonal Length = √(Leaf Width² + Leaf Height²)

Infill Material

The infill calculation uses the gate's gross leaf area and the entered coverage percentage. This is useful for estimating mesh, sheet, bars, pickets or other infill systems when an approximate mass per square metre is known.

Infill Area = Gate Area × Coverage %
Infill Weight = Infill Area × Mass per m²

The actual infill quantity may be different where the gate contains decorative openings, variable bar spacing, sheet cutouts or substantial frame areas.

Hinges, Locks and Hardware

Hardware is estimated separately so that the gate material takeoff does not overlook hinges, locks, latches and miscellaneous connection components.

The hinge quantity and hardware weights are user inputs because hardware selection varies substantially between gate types and load requirements.

Gate Posts

Dedicated gate posts can be estimated separately from the gate leaves. Enter the number of gate posts, their length and section mass.

Gate posts can carry significant vertical and lateral loads. The material estimate does not determine the required post section, foundation size, hinge capacity or anchorage.

Material Waste

A configurable overall waste percentage is added after the frame, infill, rail, post and hardware quantities have been calculated.

Waste Weight = Material Before Waste × Waste %

For custom fabricated gates, actual waste depends heavily on stock lengths and the cutting plan. A detailed fabrication takeoff can provide a more accurate purchasing quantity.

Steel Cost Estimate

The calculator multiplies the final estimated material weight by the entered steel price per kilogram.

Material Cost = Total Estimated Weight × Steel Price per kg

The result is a preliminary material cost. It does not automatically include labor, welding consumables, paint, galvanizing, powder coating, transport, installation, concrete foundations or specialist gate hardware unless their weight is included in the inputs.

Important Limitations

Final gate frame sections, posts, hinges, anchors and foundations should be checked against the actual gate loads and project requirements before fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this gate estimator calculate?
It estimates the frame, diagonal braces, internal rails, infill, gate posts, hinges, locks, miscellaneous hardware, waste and total material weight.

Can I estimate a single or double gate?
Yes. Select one or two gate leaves and enter the total gate width.

Can I estimate mesh or sheet infill?
Yes. Enter its approximate mass per square metre and the desired coverage percentage.

Does it calculate hinges?
Yes. Enter the number of hinges per leaf and the approximate weight per hinge.

Are gate posts included?
Yes. Enter the number, length and section weight of the dedicated gate posts.

Does the calculator include waste?
Yes. A configurable overall waste allowance is added to the calculated material quantity.

Can I use this for a sliding gate?
The basic material calculations can provide a rough reference, but sliding gates require additional track, rollers, guides, bracing and structural considerations.

Is this an exact fabrication bill of materials?
No. It is intended for preliminary estimating. Final quantities should be based on actual drawings, selected sections, hardware and a fabrication cutting plan.
