Determine estimated open-area percentage, solid material ratio and open versus material area for a metal floor grating layout.
Grating Dimensions
The calculator uses a simplified rectangular-grid model. Bearing-bar and cross-bar widths are treated as plan-area material widths, while their pitches define the repeating pattern.

Simplified grating pattern
Repeated clear openings between bearing and cross bars
The illustration is a simplified plan-view representation. It is not a fabrication drawing and does not represent a specific manufacturer's grating pattern.
Bearing-Bar Material Ratio
For a simplified repeating bearing-bar pattern, the proportion occupied by bearing bars can be estimated from bearing-bar width and pitch.
Bearing Material Ratio = Bearing Bar Width ÷ Bearing Bar Pitch
The corresponding clear fraction between bearing bars is:
Bearing Clear Ratio = 1 − Bearing Material Ratio
Cross-Bar Material Ratio
The same simplified approach can be applied to the cross-bar direction.
Cross Material Ratio = Cross Bar Width ÷ Cross Bar Pitch
The cross-bar clear fraction is:
Cross Clear Ratio = 1 − Cross Material Ratio
Combined Open Area
When the bearing-bar and cross-bar patterns are treated as perpendicular repeating strips, the estimated open-area fraction is the product of their clear fractions.
Open Area Ratio =
(1 − Bearing Width ÷ Bearing Pitch)
×
(1 − Cross Width ÷ Cross Pitch)
The estimated material ratio is the remaining portion of the plan area:
Material Ratio = 1 − Open Area Ratio
This simplified method accounts for the overlap between bearing-bar and cross-bar material areas rather than simply adding the two material percentages.
Open Area and Material Area
Once the open-area ratio has been calculated, the actual open and material areas can be estimated from the total panel area.
Open Area = Total Panel Area × Open Area Ratio
Material Area = Total Panel Area × Material Ratio
Important Limitations
This is a preliminary metal grating open-area estimator.
It uses a simplified rectangular repeating-grid model.
It does not reproduce manufacturer-specific grating geometry.
It does not account for serrated bearing bars or special bar profiles.
It does not account for twisted, pressed, welded or swaged cross-bar geometry in detail.
Actual cross-bar contact geometry may differ from the simplified plan-area model.
Edge bars and banding bars are not separately modeled.
Cut-outs, penetrations and irregular panel boundaries are not modeled.
It does not calculate grating load capacity.
It does not calculate drainage, airflow or light-transmission performance.
Manufacturer-published open-area percentages should be used where exact product data is required.
Important: Use this result as an estimating reference. For procurement, engineering, drainage, ventilation or other performance-critical applications, verify the actual open area from the selected grating manufacturer's technical data and exact construction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Metal Floor Grating Open-Area Calculator calculate?
It estimates the percentage of a grating panel that is open space and the percentage occupied by the simplified bearing-bar and cross-bar pattern.
What is grating open area?
Open area is the portion of the plan area that is not occupied by the grating's bearing bars, cross bars and other modeled material.
What is the material ratio?
The material ratio is the estimated percentage of the total plan area occupied by the simplified grating material pattern.
Why are bearing-bar and cross-bar ratios multiplied?
The perpendicular strip patterns overlap at their intersections. Multiplying the two clear fractions avoids simply adding material percentages and double-counting their intersections.
Does the calculator account for bar pitch?
Yes. Bearing-bar pitch and cross-bar pitch determine the repeating clear and material fractions.
Is the result an exact manufacturer's open-area value?
No. Actual grating geometry can include profiles, serrations, twisted cross bars, banding and edge details that are not represented by this simplified calculation.
