Gold Weight Comparison Calculator

Compare the same gold weight across common precious-metal measurement units. Enter a weight in grams, kilograms, troy ounces, tola, pennyweight or grains and calculate its equivalent in every supported unit at once.

Compare Gold Weight Units

One input produces a complete multi-unit comparison.

Choose the unit of your entered weight.
Equivalent Gold Weights
—
Based on the entered weight
Grams — g
Kilograms — kg
Troy Ounces — troy oz
Tola — tola
Pennyweight — DWT
Grains — grains

These are mass conversions. Gold purity does not alter the equivalent weight in another unit.

How the Gold Weight Comparison Works

This calculator first converts your entered weight into grams. It then converts that same mass into the other supported gold-weight units. This means every value shown in the comparison represents exactly the same physical mass.

The calculator supports six commonly encountered units: grams, kilograms, troy ounces, tola, pennyweight and grains.

The comparison is based on mass, not gold price or gold purity.

Gold Weight Conversion Standards

Unit Equivalent in Grams Equivalent in 1 Troy Ounce
1 gram 1 g 0.0321507466 troy oz
1 kilogram 1,000 g 32.1507465686 troy oz
1 troy ounce 31.1034768 g 1 troy oz
1 tola 11.6638125 g ≈ 0.375 troy oz
1 pennyweight 1.55517384 g 0.05 troy oz
1 grain 0.06479891 g 1/480 troy oz

Why Gold Weight Units Need Comparison

Gold is measured using different units depending on the market, product, historical convention and source of the quotation. Metric measurements such as grams and kilograms are common for physical products, while troy ounces are particularly important for international precious-metal pricing.

Tola remains relevant in some gold markets, while pennyweight and grains can appear in jewellery and precious-metal contexts. Converting them to a common mass makes specifications easier to compare.

Grams, Kilograms and Troy Ounces

Grams and kilograms are metric units. One kilogram contains exactly 1,000 grams. The troy ounce is the standard ounce used for precious metals, and one troy ounce equals exactly 31.1034768 grams.

1 kg = 1,000 g
1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g
1 kg ≈ 32.1507465686 troy oz

A regular avoirdupois ounce should not be substituted for a troy ounce in gold calculations.

Tola, Pennyweight and Grain

Tola

The standard modern tola used in precious-metal weight calculations equals 11.6638125 grams. It is a traditional unit that remains relevant in parts of the gold trade.

Pennyweight

One pennyweight, abbreviated DWT, equals 1.55517384 grams. There are exactly 20 pennyweights in one troy ounce.

Grain

One grain equals 0.06479891 grams. There are exactly 480 grains in one troy ounce.

Example: Comparing 100 Grams of Gold

If you enter 100 grams into the calculator, the same mass can be expressed in several ways:

Unit Equivalent Weight
Grams 100 g
Kilograms 0.1 kg
Troy ounces ≈ 3.21507466 troy oz
Tola ≈ 8.57353001 tola
Pennyweight ≈ 64.30149989 DWT
Grains ≈ 1,543.235834 grains

The physical amount of gold has not changed. Only the unit used to describe its mass has changed.

Does Gold Purity Affect Weight Comparison?

No. If an item weighs 100 grams, it weighs 100 grams regardless of whether the material is 24K, 22K, 18K or another gold alloy.

Purity becomes important when calculating fine-gold content or value. Those calculations are separate from unit conversion.

Fine Gold Weight = Gross Weight × Purity Fraction

For example, the gross mass of a 22K gold item can be converted into troy ounces using the same mass conversion as a 24K item. Its fine-gold content is then determined separately from its fineness.

Gold Weight Comparison for Pricing

Weight conversion can also help when comparing gold prices quoted using different units. A price per troy ounce, for example, cannot be directly compared with a price per gram until the units are normalized.

Once the weight units have been converted, purity and the pricing basis should also be checked. Retail jewellery prices can include labour, manufacturing charges, premiums, taxes and other costs beyond the value of the contained gold.

Weight comparison

Determines whether two quantities represent the same physical mass.

Price comparison

Requires both weights to be expressed in the same unit before comparing the quoted rates.

Fine-gold comparison

Requires purity or fineness to be considered separately from gross weight.

Troy Ounce and Regular Ounce Are Different

A troy ounce is not the same as the ordinary avoirdupois ounce used for many everyday goods.

Ounce Type Mass in Grams Common Use
Troy ounce 31.1034768 g Precious metals
Avoirdupois ounce 28.349523125 g General goods

When dealing with gold prices or bullion specifications, verify that an ounce refers to a troy ounce.

Important Limitations

This calculator compares mass units only. It does not determine gold authenticity, purity, market price, dealer buyback price or jewellery charges.

It does not use live gold prices. For a valuation, use the appropriate current gold rate together with the item's weight and fineness.

For physical bullion or jewellery, actual scale measurements and reliable product specifications should be used for transaction decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Gold Weight Comparison Calculator do?

It converts one entered gold weight into equivalent values across grams, kilograms, troy ounces, tola, pennyweight and grains.

What is the standard troy ounce weight for gold?

One troy ounce equals exactly 31.1034768 grams.

How many grams are in one tola?

One standard tola equals 11.6638125 grams.

How many grams are in one pennyweight?

One pennyweight equals 1.55517384 grams.

How many grams are in one grain?

One grain equals 0.06479891 grams.

Does gold purity change the weight conversion?

No. These are mass conversions. Purity affects fine-gold content and value, not the conversion between mass units.

Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?

No. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, while a standard avoirdupois ounce is approximately 28.349523125 grams.

Does this calculator use live gold prices?

No. It compares weight units and does not require a live gold price.
