Gold Refinery Loss Formula

Gold Loss = Theoretical Fine Gold − Recovered Fine Gold
Loss % = Gold Loss ÷ Theoretical Fine Gold × 100
Recovery % = 100 − Loss %

Why Percentage Loss Is More Useful Than Gross Weight Loss

Refining reduces total material mass because unwanted metals and other material are removed. Gross weight loss can therefore be enormous without representing gold loss. This calculator isolates the fine-gold component.

Interpreting an Apparent Negative Loss

If recovered fine gold exceeds theoretical fine gold, the mathematical result becomes a negative loss. In practice this should prompt a reconciliation review of assay, sample representativeness, weights and accounting period.

A negative physical gold loss is not a meaningful physical process result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is gold refinery loss percentage?

The percentage of theoretical contained fine gold that was not recovered.

Is gross mass loss the same as gold loss?

No.

Can loss be negative?

The arithmetic can, but such a result should be investigated.
