Electrical Heating Loss Cost Calculator — Estimate I²R Energy Waste

Calculate resistive heating from current and resistance, then estimate annual wasted energy and electricity cost for a cable, connection, busbar or other resistive path.

The model uses P = I²R. Use resistance appropriate to the operating condition represented by the estimate.
Enter current and resistance.

Where electrical heating losses appear

Every resistive electrical path dissipates power. Depending on the system, the dominant loss may be in conductors, joints, contacts, busbars or other resistive components.

Why current is the critical variable

Because power follows I²R, doubling current produces four times the resistive loss if resistance stays constant.

Why resistance changes matter

Reducing resistance can lower both local heating and annual energy loss, but the practical method used to reduce resistance depends on the component being studied.

Comparison value

The improved-resistance field provides a simple sensitivity test, showing how much loss would change without pretending the improvement itself is guaranteed.

Limitations

Resistance can vary with conductor temperature and frequency. This calculator uses the value you enter.

Frequently asked questions

Can resistance be zero?

Yes mathematically, giving zero modeled heating.

Can I calculate multiple identical paths?

Yes. Use the quantity field.

Does this include cooling or thermal behavior?

No. It calculates electrical loss only.
