Door-to-Wall Opening Ratio Calculator | Opening %
Calculate what percentage of a gross wall is occupied by door openings. The tool is useful for preliminary facade, partition and opening-area comparisons where the relevant wall boundary is already defined.
Wall and door inputs
Door opening ratio
Door opening ratio formula
Door opening area = door width × door height × door count
Opening ratio = door opening area ÷ wall area × 100
What the ratio tells you
The percentage quantifies the area relationship. It does not tell you whether an opening is correctly positioned, structurally supported, accessible or compliant.
Use the right boundary
A room wall, facade segment and partition wall can have different definitions of “gross wall area.” The calculator displays both areas so you can verify that your chosen boundary matches the intended analysis.
Worked example
An 10 m × 3 m wall has eight door openings of 900 mm × 2,100 mm:
Door area = 0.9 × 2.1 × 8 = 15.12 m²
Ratio = 15.12 ÷ 30 × 100 = 50.4%
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare several doors?
Yes, when the doors are the same size.
Does this include the door leaf rather than the opening?
The calculation uses the dimensions entered as the opening.
Is a certain ratio automatically acceptable?
No. Any acceptance criterion must come from the applicable project specification or authority.
Does it calculate door rough openings?
No. Use a dedicated rough-opening calculator for that task.
