Concrete Water Adjustment Calculator for Aggregate Moisture
Start with the dry-basis aggregate quantity from the mix, enter current moisture and absorption, and calculate the wet aggregate batch weight plus the water that the aggregate contributes to or removes from the mixer-water requirement.
Correct one aggregate batch
Moisture-corrected batch quantities
The two calculations you need
For an SSD reference condition, total wet aggregate mass is dry mass multiplied by one plus measured moisture. The free-water contribution is based on measured moisture minus absorption.
Free water = dry mass × (moisture − absorption) ÷ 100
Corrected mixer water = design water − free water
If measured moisture is below absorption, the free-water term becomes negative. That means the aggregate needs water to reach the SSD reference condition and the mixer-water requirement increases.
Worked example
For 1,000 kg dry aggregate at 5.0% total moisture and 1.5% absorption, wet batch mass is 1,050 kg. Free moisture is 1,000 × (5.0 − 1.5)% = 35 kg. With 160 kg design water, corrected mixer water is 125 kg.
35 kg free water contributed
160 − 35 = 125 kg mixer water
Why absorption matters
Aggregate moisture is not all free water. Some water can be held within the aggregate pores. Using total moisture as though every percentage point were available to the concrete can overstate the water contribution.
ASTM C566 is specifically used to determine total evaporable moisture content and notes that the result can be used for adjusting batch quantities.
Technical context: ASTM C566-25.
Why the correction must be based on current measurements
Stockpile moisture can change after rain, drying, drainage, handling and relocation. A batch plant that continues using a stale moisture percentage can add too much or too little mixer water.
For repeat production, use the plant's approved testing frequency and material-specific correction process.
Common mistakes
Subtracting total moisture instead of free moisture: account for absorption on the selected design basis.
Using percentages as decimal masses: 5% of 1,000 kg is 50 kg.
Ignoring negative free moisture: aggregates below the SSD basis can require additional water.
Using one moisture value for multiple stockpiles: fine and coarse aggregates can behave differently.
Limitations
This calculator does not measure moisture, absorption or actual stockpile condition. It assumes the entered dry mass and percentages are valid for the chosen design basis.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you correct batch water?
Subtract free surface water supplied by aggregate moisture from the design mixer water, or add water when aggregate moisture is below the design condition.
What is free moisture?
Moisture above the absorption basis used for the mix.
Can wet aggregate increase concrete water?
Yes. Surface moisture can contribute water to the concrete.
What if moisture is less than absorption?
The aggregate may absorb water, so the mixer-water adjustment becomes positive.
Does ASTM C566 measure absorption?
C566 determines total evaporable moisture; absorption is separate material information.
