Cement Paste Volume Calculator
Estimate the absolute volume occupied by cement and mixing water in a concrete mixture, with an optional paste-air input. This makes the paste contribution visible without turning the page into a full mix-design program.

Absolute volume method
The absolute-volume approach converts component mass into volume using each material's density. For cement, density can be approximated from specific gravity and water density. For water, volume follows directly from its density.
Vwater = water mass ÷ water density
Paste volume = Vcement + Vwater
An optional air input can add a simple additional air-space estimate to the cement-plus-water volume.
Worked example
Using 320 kg cement, specific gravity 3.15 and 160 kg water with a 1,000 kg/m³ water-density basis:
Water volume = 160 ÷ 1,000 = 0.1600 m³
Total cement + water = 0.2616 m³
The w/c ratio for the same inputs is 0.50.
Why absolute volume is useful
Concrete mixture proportioning works with both mass and volume because aggregates, cementitious materials, water and air occupy physical space. Absolute-volume checks help reconcile component quantities against a target batch volume.
That does not mean paste volume alone determines concrete performance. Aggregate grading, water demand, air, admixtures and many other variables remain important.
Paste volume and paste content are different concepts
Paste volume is a component-volume calculation. Paste content in a particular concrete design may include additional definitions, materials or air assumptions depending on the method used.
Use the project mix-design procedure when you need a formal absolute-volume reconciliation.
Common mistakes
Using specific gravity as though it were density: multiply SG by the water-density basis to obtain material density.
Adding aggregate water twice: use the approved water basis.
Calling the result total concrete volume: paste volume excludes aggregate volume.
Ignoring air: actual concrete includes an air phase that may need separate treatment.
Limitations
This page calculates cement and water absolute volume from entered quantities. It does not perform complete absolute-volume mix design, moisture correction or yield validation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate cement absolute volume?
Divide cement mass by cement density, with density derived from specific gravity and the selected water-density basis.
How is water volume calculated?
Water mass divided by water density.
Does paste volume include aggregate?
No.
Can air be included?
Yes, as an optional simplified paste-space addition.
Is this a complete mix-design calculator?
No. It is an absolute-volume component tool.
