Cable Tray Exit Opening Planner — Size a Cable Exit Envelope

Estimate a practical rectangular exit envelope from cable diameters and quantities, then compare it with your proposed tray or panel opening.

Cables exiting the tray

This planner uses cable diameter as a planning envelope. It does not establish a mechanically compliant tray exit, bend radius, fire barrier or sealing detail.
Enter the proposed opening and cable groups.

How the opening estimate works

The cable groups are sorted by diameter. The planner estimates how many cable envelopes can fit across the opening width and how many rows are needed. Side and top/bottom clearances are then reserved before comparison.

Why the result is an envelope, not a cut-out drawing

Cable exits can require more than a simple diameter calculation. Cable bend radius, tray accessories, support, mechanical protection, fire stopping and separation requirements may all change the physical opening.

Example

If an opening is 160 × 120 mm with 10 mm clearances, the usable envelope is 140 × 100 mm. The cable list is tested against that working rectangle.

Limitations

The result is a planning estimate intended to help review a proposed opening before detailing. It is not a fabrication dimension or installation approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix cable diameters?

Yes. Each group can have its own diameter and quantity.

Does the tool calculate bend radius?

No. That needs cable-specific information and is outside this simple opening-envelope model.

Can I test an opening with zero clearance?

Yes, although that represents a geometric minimum rather than an installation allowance.
