Understand single-side vs double-side AR coating on watch crystals. Use the glare simulator, compare pros and cons, and see which option fits your needs.
Select a coating type and see how glare changes
| Type | Glare reduction | Tint | Fingerprints |
|---|---|---|---|
| No AR | Low | None | Normal |
| Single-side | Good | Mild | Normal |
| Double-side | Best | More visible | More visible |
Single-side AR is usually applied on the underside of the crystal. It reduces internal reflections so the dial looks clearer, while the outside surface still behaves like normal glass/sapphire.
Double-side AR is applied to both the inside and outside. It gives the strongest glare reduction and the “invisible crystal” effect in many lighting conditions, but the outer coating can show fingerprints more easily and may wear over years of use.
Fingerprints: Double-side AR (especially the outer layer) often shows smudges more clearly. This is normal and cleans off, but some owners prefer single-side for this reason.
Tint: AR coatings can look blue, purple or green at an angle. Stronger/double coatings usually show more tint.
Durability: Inner AR is well protected. Outer AR can slowly wear at high-contact areas over many years, depending on coating quality and care.
• Double-side AR = best legibility in bright light, more tint and fingerprints
• Single-side AR = very good improvement with fewer side-effects
• No AR = simplest look, more glare in sun
• For most people, single-side or double-side both beat an uncoated crystal outdoors
Why does my watch crystal look blue or purple? That is usually the anti-reflective coating reflecting a small amount of light. It is normal and not a defect.
Is double AR better than single AR? Double AR reduces glare more, especially outdoors. Single AR already helps a lot and often shows fewer fingerprints and less tint.
Does AR coating wear off? The outer coating can wear slowly over years with friction and cleaning. The inner coating is protected by the crystal and usually lasts much longer.
Does AR make the crystal completely invisible? No. It greatly reduces reflections, but under some angles and lighting you will still see the crystal and a slight tint.
Is AR only for sapphire crystals? No. AR can be applied to mineral glass as well, but it is most commonly discussed with sapphire because many mid and high-end watches use sapphire.
