How to use this tool

  1. Measure the socket opening and usable depth, and identify the mount shape if possible.
  2. Measure wheel diameter and total installed height that the furniture can accommodate.
  3. Enter a candidate caster’s dimensions and its documented load rating.
  4. Review every check. If the socket is damaged or the mount shape is unknown, have the hardware inspected before installation.

What the result means

A caster can have a correct-looking wheel and still be incompatible because its stem size, engagement depth, mounting style or installed height is wrong. The tool separately screens diameter, length/depth, wheel diameter, total height and load rating.

Load should be considered per caster, not simply by dividing a static furniture weight equally among all wheels: floors are uneven and loads shift as furniture moves. Existing sockets may also be weakened or enlarged with age.

Limits and good practice

The result is a dimensional screening, not a mechanical safety certification. Confirm maker specifications, fastener design, socket condition, floor type, furniture weight and expected movement. Unknown or plate-style mounts cannot be validated by stem diameter alone.

Frequently asked questions

Should stem diameter match exactly?

It should match the socket or threaded mount according to the caster maker’s specification. This tool allows only the tolerance you enter.

Is wheel diameter the same as installed height?

No. Installed height includes the caster body and mounting stem, and determines how high the furniture will sit.

How much load should each caster carry?

Use a realistic per-caster load with allowance for uneven weight distribution and movement. Follow the manufacturer’s rating method.

Can a round stem replace a plate mount?

Not as a direct dimensional match. Mounting types differ structurally and require their own fixing method.

Can I use these results to move heavy furniture?

Not by themselves. Have the mount and furniture inspected and ensure load ratings and attachment integrity are adequate.

What if the old socket is split or loose?

Do not install a replacement into an unstable socket. Repair or reinforcement should be chosen with preservation and load requirements in mind.
