How Rolex Serial Numbers Work

Rolex has used several numbering systems over the decades. Before 2010, the serial number could pinpoint the production year fairly accurately. In late 2010, Rolex switched to "Random Serial Numbers" (mixed letters and numbers with no order), making it impossible to date newer watches by serial alone.

Is the Rolex Serial Number Date Exact?

No. These dates represent when the case was stamped, not necessarily when the watch was assembled or sold. A movement might be placed in a case months later, and the watch might sit at a dealer for a year. This tool provides the production era, not the sales date.

How to Find Your Rolex Serial Number

There are two main locations to find your serial number depending on the age of your watch:

• Between the Lugs (6 o'clock): On older models (pre-2005), you must remove the bracelet at the 6 o'clock side. The number is engraved on the case body.
• The Rehaut (Inner Ring): On modern models (post-2005), the serial number is laser-engraved on the inner metal ring around the dial at the 6 o'clock position.
