Understanding the result
Prepare a repeatable batch record for traditional hide glue. The calculator treats ratios as dry glue to water by weight, allowing either a total target mix mass or a desired dry-glue mass. Hide-glue products differ in granulation, bloom strength and instructions, so this planner does not set a universal soaking time or working temperature. Follow the supplier’s product sheet.
- These results support research and planning; they do not independently establish authenticity, age or value.
- Keep direct observations separate from assumptions, seller claims and conclusions.
- Seek qualified, object-specific advice when the decision affects value, repair, safety or a legal transaction.
Good records improve research
Keep original observations separate from conclusions. Photograph the whole object and relevant details in even light; record dimensions, labels, maker marks, repairs, provenance and the references consulted. Do not alter the object just to obtain another clue.
Methodology and limitations
The calculator treats water ratio as water mass divided by dry glue mass. In total-batch mode, the total mixture is split according to 1 + ratio; in dry-glue mode, the water amount is dry glue mass multiplied by the selected ratio. Product-specific soaking, heating and working instructions remain separate.
For a ratio of 1 part dry glue to 2 parts water by weight, a 300 g total mixture contains 100 g dry glue and 200 g water. If batch mode is based on dry glue, 100 g dry glue requires 200 g water for the same ratio. Temperature guidance is displayed only when the user records a verified product-specific range.
Historical objects are often repaired, refinished, reassembled or made from more than one material. Modern reproductions may imitate older processes. A likely match should always be phrased as a research hypothesis unless it is supported by a qualified, object-specific assessment and trustworthy documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Is the ratio by weight or volume?
This calculator uses dry glue weight to water weight. Do not substitute measuring cups unless the product instructions specifically provide a validated volume ratio.
Does every hide glue use the same temperature?
No. Product type and preparation method vary. Follow the actual supplier instructions and use only verified temperature guidance.
Can I use a microwave or direct flame?
Use an appropriate controlled heating method specified by the product manufacturer. Avoid direct uncontrolled heat and never leave heated glue unattended.
Why prepare only the amount needed?
Hide glue working time and usability depend on temperature, concentration, age and the product. Prepare a practical batch based on the task and instructions.
Should this ratio be used for valuable furniture without testing?
No. Confirm the adhesive is appropriate for the particular material and conservation goal, test on a suitable sample where appropriate, and consult a conservator for important objects.
