Authentic Ethiopian opals (often hydrophane) have irregular play-of-color and usually absorb water, temporarily losing their color until they dry. Synthetic opals, such as Gilson opals, often display a tell-tale "lizard skin" or columnar pattern under magnification. If the color flashes look completely uniform or arranged in perfect geometric columns, you are likely looking at a synthetic opal identification marker.
A solid opal is a natural gem cut entirely from one piece of rough. A doublet opal is a thin slice of real opal glued to a dark backing (like ironstone or black glass) to enhance color. A triplet opal is a doublet with an additional clear quartz or plastic cap glued on top to protect the thin opal layer. To verify your opal's true value, always check the side profile. If you see perfectly straight, uniform lines separating different materials, it is an assembled stone, not a solid gem.

If you have an Ethiopian Welo opal, it is likely "hydrophane," meaning it absorbs water. Exposing it to tap water, lotions, or high humidity can make it turn cloudy or yellow. Real Australian opals do not do this. This reaction is actually a strong indicator of an authentic hydrophane opal, though care must be taken to let it air dry naturally to restore its fire.
