Diamond Clarity Scale: FL to I3 Explained in Simple Terms

Diamond clarity describes how many internal features or surface blemishes a diamond has. The fewer the inclusions, the higher the clarity grade. The diamond clarity scale runs from FL and IF at the top, through VVS, VS, and SI grades, down to I1, I2, and I3 at the lower end. Clarity is assessed under 10x magnification, and it is one of the main factors used to judge diamond quality. A flawless diamond is extremely rare, while many diamonds in the market still look beautiful and eye-clean at normal viewing distance.

Quick Answer

FL and IF are the cleanest grades. VVS1 and VVS2 have extremely tiny inclusions that are very hard to see. VS1 and VS2 have small inclusions that are usually still difficult to notice without magnification. SI1 and SI2 have visible inclusions under magnification and may or may not look eye-clean. I1, I2, and I3 have obvious inclusions and usually are not eye-clean.

Diamond clarity is determined by trained gemologists using 10x magnification under controlled lighting. They look at the size, number, position, nature, relief, and color or contrast of inclusions. They also consider the overall appearance of the diamond. A stone with fewer inclusions may still look less attractive if those inclusions sit in a bad place, while a stone with slightly lower clarity can still look very beautiful if the inclusions are small and hidden well.

FL means flawless. No inclusions or blemishes are visible at 10x magnification. This is one of the rarest grades in diamond grading. IF means internally flawless. No internal inclusions are visible at 10x magnification, though tiny surface blemishes may be present. Both grades are extremely high in value because they are so difficult to find.

VVS1 and VVS2 mean very, very slightly included. The inclusions are extremely difficult to detect at 10x. These diamonds are often chosen by buyers who want near-perfect appearance with a little more availability than FL or IF. VVS diamonds are highly valued because they offer exceptional clarity and strong visual beauty.

VS1 and VS2 mean very slightly included. The inclusions are difficult to detect at 10x and are often still invisible to the naked eye. Many diamonds in these grades are considered eye-clean, which makes them very popular. They give a good balance of beauty and value.

SI1 and SI2 mean slightly included. SI1 diamonds often have inclusions that are noticeable under magnification but may still look eye-clean in many stones. SI2 diamonds are more likely to show inclusions to the eye, depending on the size and position of the features. These grades can offer strong value if chosen carefully.

I1, I2, and I3 mean included. In these grades, inclusions are obvious and usually visible without magnification. I1 diamonds may still work for some buyers if the inclusions do not affect appearance too much, but I2 and I3 generally show much more visible internal features and may affect brilliance and durability.

Clarity is only one part of diamond quality. Cut, color, and carat weight also matter. A well-cut diamond can look more beautiful than a cleaner stone with a poor cut. That is why the whole diamond needs to be judged as a complete stone, not by clarity alone. A slightly included diamond can still look stunning if it is well cut and well proportioned.

Many buyers focus on eye-clean appearance rather than chasing the highest clarity grade. A diamond that looks clean to the eye can be a smart choice because it gives beauty without paying for invisible perfection. This is why VS and many SI1 stones are so popular in the market. They often deliver a very attractive look at a better price than higher clarity grades.

All diamonds have inclusions. Flawless diamonds are extremely rare. That is normal in nature. Clarity is about how visible those inclusions are, not whether the diamond is perfect in a mathematical sense. This is what makes the clarity scale useful. It gives buyers and sellers a clear way to compare stones and understand value.

The diamond clarity scale helps buyers choose the right balance between purity, beauty, and budget. FL and IF are for the rarest top-end stones. VVS and VS offer excellent clarity for fine jewelry. SI grades can provide strong value. I grades are more affordable but show obvious inclusions. The right choice depends on the look, budget, and purpose of the diamond.
