Antique Treadle Sewing Machine Belt Length Estimator

Create a first-pass belt-length estimate for a treadle sewing machine drive loop. Compare a pulley geometry calculation with a directly measured cord path, then keep the assumptions beside the result when sourcing a replacement.

Choose a measurement method

All dimensions must use the same unit. Measure pulley diameters at the belt's running surface and center distance between axle centers.

Frequently asked questions

Why might the formula and cord measurement differ?

The formula assumes circular pulleys, a simple open belt, and center-aligned axes. A cord follows the actual path and can account for nonideal geometry, but its measurement may be affected by slack or stretch.

Should I add slack to make the belt easier to fit?

Do not guess an allowance. Belt construction and joining method determine sizing. Follow the chosen supplier's fitting method and use the allowance field only when you have a supported value.

Can this tell me which belt to buy?

No. It estimates length only. Verify width, cross-section, material, joining system, pulley profile, and safe condition with a specialist before purchase or use.

Use this as a sourcing record

For an unusual antique machine, keep the model marks, measurement method, unit, and belt supplier guidance together. Auction descriptions and broad model labels may not capture alterations made during the machine's life.
