Antique Phonograph Record & Playback Session Catalog

Catalog the physical record separately from the playback event. Preserve the label's wording, format clues, equipment used, and any audible observations without treating one listening session as a condition certification.

Record or cylinder identity

Playback session record

Only make a playback entry if playback was appropriate and carried out with suitable equipment. Otherwise choose “not played” and use the observation fields for existing evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I infer the recording date from a catalog number?

No. A number may help research but numbering sequences can overlap, be reused, or vary by market. Cite a relevant discography or archival reference and retain uncertainty.

How is elapsed session duration calculated?

The tool subtracts the entered local start time from end time. If a session passes midnight, it treats the end as the following day. The duration describes the session, not the record's playing time.

Does a clean playback prove good condition?

No. A short or partial session may not reveal all physical issues. This form records observations only and is not a conservation assessment.

Collecting context: document the individual lot

A recent three-day antique sale announced more than 1,200 lots across varied collecting areas. In broad catalogs, a precise record-level identifier and a source note make an item easier to distinguish from similarly described objects and preserve the limits of what was observed.
