Antique Object Crate & Packing Dimension Planner
Turn measured object dimensions and proposed protective clearances into a preliminary inside and outside crate envelope. Capture orientation, protrusions, handling constraints and questions for your qualified packer or carrier.
Measure the object first
Enter the maximum overall length, width and height, including projecting parts and removable elements as applicable. Keep the measurement method and orientation notes with the estimate so a packing professional can review the same assumptions.
Preliminary dimensions only
Padding and wall allowances vary by object, material, route, handling, crate design and carrier requirements. This calculator does not design a certified crate, specify conservation materials, determine safe handling or guarantee fit. Confirm with an experienced packer.
Object measurements and allowances
Use a single unit system for all dimensions. Result dimensions are rounded up to one decimal place.
Pre-dispatch planning checklist
Use this as a conversation starter; follow the object owner’s and carrier’s approved procedures.
Why a dimensional allowance is only a starting point
The simple calculation adds the entered clearance twice—once for each side—then adds the entered wall thickness twice to estimate outside dimensions. It treats the object as a rectangular envelope. Irregular shapes, mounts, cradles, internal restraint, shock isolation, access panels, bracing and crate construction can all change the final design.
Measure objects in the orientation that will be packed and document the chosen coordinate convention. Confirm whether handles, feet, finials, loose components or existing supports are included. The packed weight estimate should include the crate and all packing materials before a carrier limit or lifting plan is considered.
