Antique Model Train Track Layout & Table Planner
Test a simple oval layout against a measured table, scale and track radius before arranging a vintage or inherited model railway. Estimate the tabletop envelope, straight-run length and train clearance, then save a shareable planning brief.
Table, scale and track assumptions
Use the track maker’s actual radius and segment dimensions where known. The sketch is schematic and does not model a specific brand, turnout, elevation or track geometry.
What this layout estimate can tell you
For a simple oval with semicircular ends, the minimum tabletop width is approximately twice the track radius plus twice the edge clearance. The remaining tabletop length becomes the two straight sections in this simplified geometry. The outer loop length is estimated from two straight runs plus one full circle at the entered radius.
The calculation treats radius as the track centerline radius and assumes a flat, rectangular table and symmetric oval. It does not include track bed width, scenery, platform clearances, access reach, curve transition, locomotive overhang, electrical isolation or manufacturer-specific restrictions. Add margin and verify with the actual rolling stock and track components.
