Gemological BLUF: Alexandrite Locality & Color-Change Benchmarks

Bottom Line Up Front: Natural alexandrite (BeAl₂O₄:Cr³⁺) exhibits the "Alexandrite Effect" due to Cr³⁺ ions substituting for Al³⁺ in an octahedral crystal field, creating an absorption band at 580 nm (yellow) flanked by balanced 490 nm (blue-green) and 640 nm (red) transmission windows.

Deposit Origin 5500K Daylight Hue 2700K Incandescent Hue Typical Cr³⁺ : Fe³⁺ Ratio Color Change Grade

580 nm Absorption Band

Unlike emerald where chromium transmits primarily green light, the tighter Al³⁺ octahedral site in chrysoberyl shifts the Cr³⁺ absorption band to 580 nm, splitting visible transmission equally between blue-green and deep red.

Lapidary Table Orientation

Master cutters orient the table facet perpendicular to the crystallographic γ-axis or α-axis so that both the emerald-green and purple-red pleochroic rays reflect back through the crown without orange β-axis dilution.

Synthetic vs. Natural Detection

Flux-grown and Czochralski pulled synthetic alexandrites show curved striae, platinum platelets, or parallel gas bubbles, whereas natural stones exhibit two-phase liquid fingerprint inclusions and actinolite needles.
